Mediaworkshop:
Adivasi Soundscapes emerging as a tool of
Land Right Awareness in Chhota Nagpur
From 17 until 19/12/2024 we facilitated a 3-day program on Indigenous soundscapes at the Bagaicha Social Research Center in Ranchi (India). Luca presented the multisensory and decolonial framework from which our short film ‘Sonic Ecology of the Adivasi Landscape’ evolved. This sparked some interesting discussions with the participants, mainly PhD students with different focuses in Adivasi studies, who attended from various places in India. Further, we introduced them to the method of ‘listening walk’, leading to a collaborative soundscape composition.
We were also honored to welcome Meghnath from Akhra Ranchi, who taught us more about the role of film and sound in Adivasi activism. On the last day, we had another discussion session with Tony, the Bagaicha coordinator, who shared insights on the role of meditation in raising sonic awareness and he introduced us to the history of land rights in Chhotanagpur, his field of expertise.
We are super grateful for the inspiring discussions with these scholars and community workers on how to support Adivasi resistance through cross cultural resonance.

The soundscape composition below is the result of the recordings recorded during the soundwalks in the rural area around Bagaicha Social Center, mainly inhabited by Adivasi people. During the walk, it became clear how challenging it is to record rural sounds without interference from urban sounds. In the reflective session we discussed the different individual interpretations of each soundscape. During the creative group session the soundscapes were transformed by Davinci Resolve into a composition symbolizing the experience of the participants.
